CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Davidson junior Zach Kayne went 4-for-9 with a double, a triple and five RBIs while senior Hugh Eden collected three hits, six runs, two homers and five RBIs but the Wildcats dropped both ends of a Southern Conference baseball doubleheader at Western Carolina Saturday afternoon. Davidson lost the first game 22-7 and the second 10-8.

The Wildcats (8-17, 1-7) led 8-5 in game two, but the Catamounts (14-15, 4-4) scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 10-8 advantage.

Two Davidson errors and consecutive singles by Matt Johns, Nick Liles and Brent Greer keyed the inning for Western Carolina. The Wildcats got Chase FitzPatrick on first with two outs in the ninth inning but could not push a run across.

Davidson trailed 3-1 in the fifth when Eden jacked a two-run homer with two outs to tie the score. The Catamounts came back with two in the bottom of the frame, but Tommy Piacenza plated FitzPatrick with a single in the sixth to make the margin 5-4.

FitzPatrick singled in a run in the top of the seventh, and twin brother Chris drove in two more runs with a single as Davidson took a 7-5 lead. A Kayne double with two outs in the eighth inning drove in Brett Shore, who reached on a single, to push the cushion to 8-5.

Sophomore Thomas Middour started the game for the 'Cats and went six innings, allowing four earned runs but walking six.

Trailing 15-0 in game one, the Wildcats got on the board in the sixth inning when Kayne singled home Eden. Davidson got three runs in the top of the seventh. Danny Weiss led off with a double, Piacenza followed with a single, and Eden homered to left field with two outs to make the score 15-4.

Western Carolina got a run in the bottom of the seventh and scored six in the eighth to extend the margin to 22-4. Davidson added three in the top of the ninth when Kayne tripled with the bases loaded.

The Wildcats and Catamounts will finish the three-game series with a 1 p.m. contest Sunday.
