71-55 Win Over CofC Gives 'Cats No. 3 Seed on Senior Day

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Davidson came back from a six-point halftime deficit by holding College of Charleston to 20 second half points on 7-of-38 shooting, and junior Mercedes Robinson (Baltimore, Md.) recorded her league-leading 14th double-double as the Wildcats concluded the regular season with a 71-55 victory at Belk Arena in women's basketball Southern Conference action on Saturday.
With the win, the Wildcats secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming SoCon Tournament as they enter the tourney with an overall record of 19-10 and a 13-5 mark in league play. CofC finished out the regular season at 13-15 overall and an even 9-9 in SoCon games.
Robinson led a 42-point second-half charge for Davidson by scoring 14 of her game-high 18 points and hauling in eight of her 10 boards in the half. She finished 8-of-12 from the field, while adding three steals and a block.
Davidson outscored the Cougars, 42-20, in the second half as it shot an even 50 percent (14-of-28) and drained four of its seven three-balls in the half.
Sophomore Alex Thompson (Asheville, N.C.) was right behind Robinson with 16 points, eight of them from the charity stripe (8-of-8) and 11 of them coming in the second stanza. The sophomore, who also dished out six assists, closed out the regular season hitting her last 35 straight free throws, including a 4-for-4 performance in the last minutes to ice the win for the 'Cats.
Trailing 38-29 after a Nikki Williams' three-pointer, Davidson started its comeback on a Robinson layup at the 18:18 mark. Thompson later cut the Cougar lead to 40-38 with two free throws and then on the Wildcats' next possession, sophomore Moncia Laune (Ashland, Neb.) drained a trey from the left wing with 13:35 on the clock to give the 'Cats its first lead, 41-40, since the 9:05 mark of the first half.
Laune had one of her best all-around games of the season. The sophomore showed hustle on the defensive end with two steals and four boards, while on offense, she tied her season-high with nine points and dished out four assists.
The in the closing minutes of the contest, senior Honna Housley (Riceville, Tenn.) halted any idea of a Cougar comeback when after she missed the second of her two free throws, stole the ball off the miss and canned a long jumper in the right corner for a 62-52 lead at the 1:26 mark to force a timeout by College of Charleston.
Though those were the only three points Housley scored in her final game at Belk Arena, they were a dagger to the Cougars' chances of thinking about a comeback.
Prior to the game, Davidson honored its three seniors, Danielle Hemerka (Blackwood, N.J.), Housley and Katie Hamilton (Lilburn, Ga.) for their outstanding four-year playing careers at Davidson.
