Shoemaker Leads 'Cats in Season Opener at Queens

CHARLOTTE — Davidson swimmers earned four event wins and turned in other notable performances in the season opener against Queens Saturday at the Royals' Levine Aquatic Center.
Henry Shoemaker was a two-event winner to lead the Davidson men, while Ginny Thorsen and Caroline Furbay registered wins for the women.
"We had fun today," said coach John Young. "The 'Cats grabbed a few wins against a very good Queens team, but more importantly, we saw a lot of spirit and a lot that we can build on. Standouts easily start with Henry, who controlled the distance events and grabbed a PR in the 100. Ginny and Caroline led the women. And across the board, the first-years impressed in their debuts."
Shoemaker, last year's Atlantic 10 champion in the 1,650 free, won the day's two distance free events. He touched first in the 1,000 with a time of 9:34.80, winning by nearly 10 seconds. Then he won the 500 in 4:34.78, by seven-plus seconds.
Thorsen set the pace in the 200 free (1:54.86), while Furbay won the 100 free (52.55).
Queens prevailed in the team standings with scores of 152.5-52.5 (men) and 139-66 (women).

The Wildcats will host their first home meet on Friday, Oct. 2 when Duke visits.
