WASHINGTON — Davidson senior swimmers Liam McDonough, Ryan Shute and Fletcher Smith have been named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team, the league announced Friday afternoon.
The honor is the second straight for McDonough and Shute and the first for Smith.
A political science major from Takoma Park, Md., McDonough was a championship finalist in two events at last week's conference meet, taking seventh in the 200 back (1:50.60) and eighth in the 100 back (48.95). He also swam fifth with the 400 medley relay (3:16.08) and to 11th in the 200 IM (1:48.88).
A biology major from North Attleboro, Mass., Shute provided one of the Wildcats' top moments at the A-10 Championships, winning a swim-off to earn a spot in the 400 IM finals. That led to a 15th-place finish in the 400 IM (4:08.04), and he also competed in the 200 IM and 200 breast at A-10s.
Smith, an economics major from Milford, Mich., earned his fourth consecutive medal (and third silver) with the 800 free relay team (6:29.55) and set a school record in the 200 fly (1:45.63), while placing fifth. He also won consolation finals in the 200 free (1:38.59) and 200 back (1:46.50) and took fifth with the 400 free relay (2:59.79).
