Wrestling Battles Back; Beat VMI on Senior Night

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson College wrestling team snapped a 12-dual losing streak with an emphatic win over the VMI Keydets in Belk Arena on Friday night.

Match Highlights

After winning the coin flip, head coach Nate Carr Jr. elected to begin the night at 165. His decision paid off. Bryce Griffin set the tone by securing a dominant 21-4 tech fall over Logan Chambers. Davidson led, 5-0.
Marc Koch followed suit with a hard-fought 5-1 decision over Luke Hart to extend Davidson's lead to 8-0.
VMI answered back by taking the next three bouts, all bonus-point victories, to go in front 13-8.
Sophomore Enis Ljikovic stopped the momentum with a gritty 4-2 win over Waylon Rogers to make it 13-11 VMI. It was Ljikovic's first SoCon win of the season.
The Keydets won the 133-pound bout to extend the gap to 16-11, but it was all Wildcats the rest of the way.
Freshman Marley Washington got his first conference win with aggressive and relentless offense at 141. He turned in a 16-9 decision over Phoenix Ayala to cut the deficit to 16-14.
In the most anticipated match of the night, Davidson's win's leader, Tyler-Xavier McKnight faced VMI win's leader and RPI-ranked No. 29, Patrick Jordon at 149. McKnight overpowered Jordon with early takedowns in the first and second period to cruise to an 11-6 victory. It ended a three-match losing streak and gives him a crucial win for potential ranking and seeding purposes.
With Davidson leading by one point, 17-16, freshman Anderson Heap stepped to the mat wrestling up a weight class. Heap sealed the deal with a commanding 11-1 major decision to give the Wildcats their first dual victory since November.

The Wildcats will travel to Boone on Sunday to face App State in their final SoCon dual of the season. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
