Davidson Defeats Longwood in 2-0 Thriller

DAVIDSON - The Davidson women's soccer team remained undefeated at Alumni Stadium, scoring back-to-back second-half goals less than two minutes apart in a 2-0 victory over Longwood Thursday night.Â
The win improves the Wildcats overall record to 3-1-1 while its record at home becomes a clean 2-0-1.Â
"I was proud of the team for getting a result tonight," said head coach Riley Piechnick. "We didn't start the game strong, but we turned it around in the second half. Once we scored the first goal we didn't let up and were able to increase the deficit while keeping a clean sheet. Longwood made us fight for it the whole game but I thought the team did a great job to respond."Â
Two strong defensive stands prompted a scoreless first half that saw the Wildcats take five shots while holding the Lancers to just one.Â
Coming out of the break, the stalemate continued through the first 10 minutes of the second half before ignited. Senior captain Maddie Moody took advantage of an open net to score her third consecutive goal of the season in the 61st minute.Â
Not long after, Savannah Pruitt extended the 'Cats lead in jaw-dropping fashion, burying a 25-yard shot to the upper left corner out of reach of Sara Curtis in goal for Longwood.Â
Davidson goalkeeper Emily Smith earned her second clean sheet of the season after 90 minutes spent in goal and one save in addition to lending a full-field assist on Moody's goal.Â
For the match, the 'Cats held advantages in shots (9-5) and shots on goal (6-1) while the Lancers held an edge in corner kicks (5-2).Â

Davidson will continue the non-conference portion of the schedule when it hosts Appalachian State to Alumni Stadium 1 p.m. Sunday on Senior Day.Â
