Decker Posts 25 Kills as ‘Cats Top Royals

CHARLOTTE -- Isabel Decker recorded a career-high 25 kills to lead the Wildcats to a five-set win over Queens University on Friday night.
Emma Slusser added 13 kills to power the Davidson offense to its third win of the season, while Jordan Hummel and Elena Garcia-Guerrios added 24 and 20 digs, respectively, to steady the defense.
The Wildcats also dished 25 assists from first year Kinsey Smith and 20 from Xuan Ngyuen. Decker added 14 digs in addition to her performance as the top scorer of the match.
Davidson jumped out to an 8-1 run to start the game, cruising to a first-set win while holding the Royals to just 10 points.
The 'Cats also won the second, this time behind three blocks and 19 digs as a team. A run of seven unanswered points, five of which were assisted by Nguyen, powered the 'Cats to the 25-19 second-set victory.
The Royals battled back to win the third set behind 15 kills, as the home team reeled off its own 8-1 run to win back a set.
A .324 hitting percentage powered the Royals to victory in the fourth set. The Wildcats kept it to a 19-18 deficit before ultimately losing the penultimate set.
A third and final 8-1 run ultimately clinched the game for the Wildcats in the fifth. Powered by three kills apiece from Slusser and Decker, including Slusser's final kill of the match, Davidson was able to clinch the 15-10 five-set victory against the Royals.
The win moves the Wildcats to a 3-4 record on the season as they begin their third-straight three-match weekend.

The 'Cats will return to action in Curry Arena on Saturday morning, beginning at 10:30 a.m. against William & Mary. Davidson will then finish off the Queens Invitational with a final match against USC Upstate at 4:30 p.m.
