Wildcats Knock Off FGCU 57-56 in Opener
11/5/2024 10:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball
DAVIDSON — Millie Prior scored a game-high 18 points and Davidson overcame an 11-point second-half deficit — while making some key stops late — to top Florida Gulf Coast 57-56 in the season opener Tuesday night in Belk Arena.
Prior, who also had seven rebounds and blocked four shots, was one of three double-digit scorers for the Wildcats, who notched the noteworthy win over an Eagles team that last year won the Atlantic Sun Conference and reached the NCAA Tournament.
Up one point in the final seconds, the Wildcats set their defense against an Eagles team that, despite being held to 35.1 percent shooting Tuesday, is known for its scoring ability. The Eagles got the ball out of a timeout with 14 seconds left and looked for a go-ahead shot, but Skyler Gill missed a pull up jumper with two ticks left, and Prior secured the rebound to end it.
The Wildcats trailed most of the night, but used a 9-0 run, which began with a Prior bucket late in the third quarter, to pull within one, 49-48, in the fourth. They got their first lead on a Katie Donovan basket, which pushed the Wildcats in front 54-53 with 3:27 left.
Donovan finished with 15 points and a game-high eight boards, while Kyra Bruyndoncx scored 10 points in her debut. Mallorie Haines scored eight, including a late 3-pointer to finalize the Wildcats' scoring, and Issy Morgan dished a team-best four assists.
Davidson shot 70 percent (7-of-10) from the field in the third quarter and held FGCU to a 2-of-13 (15.4 percent) night shooting the 3-ball.
Guard Emani Jefferson led FGCU with 15 points, but fouled out with 5:35 remaining.
