DAVIDSON, N.C. – Behind a pair of 15-kill performances from Emma Slusser and Melanie Tilles, the Davidson Wildcats cruised past Rhode Island for a 3-1 Atlantic 10 victory on Friday night.
The win marks Davidson's 10th conference win of the season, and the fourth straight season in which the 'Cats have recorded double-digit league victories. The last time the Wildcats reached this feat was a six-year run from 1997-2002.
Slusser and Tilles' 15-kill days ended with both attackers swinging .583 at the net, as the duo both had 24 attempts and just one attack error. Tilles, a middle blocker, also recorded two solo stuffs and a pair of block assists.
Davidson swiftly took a 2-0 match lead after swinging a .531 hitting percentage in the first, followed by a .314 effort in the second. After being tied 15-all in set two, the 'Cats pulled off a 6-2 run, thanks to a pair of kills from Tilles and Meile Songaila, to ultimately win the second, 25-21.
Rhode Island flipped the script in set three, downing the Wildcats 25-21 despite Davidson jumping out to a 9-2 run.
In the final frame, Davidson kept its foot on the gas and got out to another 4-0 start, this time thanks to strong serving from Xuan Nguyen, which included a service ace. After another Tilles kill, the 'Cats led 16-6 midway through the set, and closed out the match on a 6-0 tear to ultimately seal the 25-13 match-clinching victory.
Anna Withee (10 kills) and Songaila (9) also anchored Davidson's offense, while Kayla Davis added eight kills of her own from the middle. Nguyen and freshman setter Kinsey Smith dished 25 assists apiece, while Nguyen also recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 10 digs.
