'Cats Storm Back in 3-2 Win Over George Mason

DAVIDSON -Â The Davidson volleyball team rattled off three straight set wins to complete a huge 3-2 comeback triumph over George Mason Saturday.
Winning the third and fourth sets in extra time, the Wildcats' comeback effort capped an emphatic win in the decisive fifth set.Â
A major 6-1 run in the fifth powered Davidson to an advantage in the decisive set. A kill by Isabel Decker and a great defensive set by the Wildcats clinched the win to close out Alumni weekend. In the final set, a combined four kills by Anna Withee and Decker sealed the victory.  Â
A back-and-forth match started with a first set that was tied at 10 separate points. Despite seven assists by Kinsey Smith and six digs by Jordan Hummel, the 'Cats fell short in the first by just three points. Back-to-back blocks by Cayla Weisner and a 7-1 run powered Davidson in the second set, forcing overtime before the Patriots ultimately won the second .Â
Nine kills and an ace from Decker powered Davidson to early momentum in the third frame. Following an early 8-2 run in the set, both teams worked to tie on 10 different occasions. While facing two match points, the 'Cats rallied to force extra time once again, before a kill by Melanie Tillies gave the Wildcats their first set of the night and continued the match.Â
A 7-2 run in the fourth was highlighted by two Xuan Ngyuen aces, leading to another late set tie. In overtime, a kill by Decker and strong defense from the Wildcats won a fourth , forcing a decisive fifth set.Â
The 'Cats were paced by Decker with 24 kills and a career-high 18 kills from Meile Songalia. 31 assists from Ngyuen and 25 assists from Smith highlighted the teamwork on display in completing the comeback. 24 digs by Hummel and 5 blocks by Tillies helped capped the defensive efforts on the night.Â
