Davis Leads 'Cats in Five Set Thriller

DAVIDSON, N.C. – In her first match back since September 8, middle blocker Kayla Davis led the 'Cats with a career high 14-kill performance to defeat the Duquesne Dukes 3-2 on Friday night.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 10-11 on the year and 6-4 in Atlantic 10 play. The victory also marks Davidson's fourth-straight win and fourth five-set win of the season.
In addition to Davis' career night, the senior also swung a game-best .619 at the net. Isabel Decker paced the offense with a match-high 22 kills, while Emma Slusser and Meile Songaila added 11 and nine kills, respectively. As a team, the Wildcats served a season-high 11 aces.
Despite Davidson holding a 20-16 lead in set one, Duquesne closed out on a 9-2 run to win the first 25-22.
In set two, the Wildcats improved their attacking percentage from -.026 to .302 and broke through 16 tie scores thanks to a service ace from Anna Withee to settle the match with a 26-24 set two win.
Elena Garcia-Guerrios took the 'Cats off to a 7-0 start in set three with two service aces and strong serving, and put Davidson ahead 2-1 in the match after a 25-18 victory. The Dukes however, responded with their own 25-18 win in the fourth to force a fifth set.
Davis scored Davidson's first three points of the final frame with kills out of the middle, while Decker served an ace of her own to put the 'Cats up 6-3 midway through. After a Melanie Tilles and Slusser block, the pendulum swung in Davidson's direction for good, as Songaila notched her ninth and final kill of the match to secure the 3-2 victory.
