CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Davidson's Frances Whitworth finished first among collegiate runners and second overall Friday afternoon at the 2023 Queen City Invite.
Hosted by Queens University, the annual event took place on the Larry McAfee Course at McAlpine Park.
A senior from Winston-Salem, N.C., Whitworth finished the 5k race and Wildcats' season opener with a time of 17:26.64, which bettered the third-place competitor by 36 seconds.
"That was a great opener to the season," Whitworth said. "I felt very smooth and strong throughout and was proud of myself for pushing hard when I was mostly alone for the whole race. My summer training paid off and I'm very excited about the season."
Davidson's Anne Berquist placed 11th, running a 18:39.96, while teammates Molly Sullivan (19:04.62 | 19th) and Mary Shoop (19:06.66 | 20th) also finished inside the Top-20.
The Wildcats 2023 campaign will feature four regular season events followed by the Atlantic 10 Championships at the end of October and NCAA Regionals Nov. 10.
