Davidson Drops First of the Year at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Davidson volleyball suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-1 to three-time Big South champions High Point University.
The result moves the 'Cats to 7-1 on the year, with one weekend of regular season matches left to play.
Davidson jumped out strong in set one, swinging a match-best .289, as Sola Omonije started the party with a solo block in the middle. Despite the Panthers pulling ahead by four, kills from Mia Compas, Elena Garcia-Guerrios and Omonije brought the game back within one, 18-17. High Point looked to close out the set with a 22-21 lead, but Isabel Decker came to the rescue from the end line, serving two aces and leading the 'Cats to a 25-22 set one win.
The Panthers turned the ship around in the second set, leading by two throughout much of the frame and blocking four Wildcat swings down the stretch to hold off a late Davidson comeback.
After winning the second, 25-21, High Point doubled down with a 25-23 third set victory. The Panthers led 6-3 early, but timely blocks from Omonije, Anna Withee, Compas and Kayla Davis helped pull the 'Cats in front 18-14 and forced a High Point timeout. Out of the break, HPU gained momentum, scoring three straight and ultimately pulling ahead to seal the 2-1 match lead.
In the final frame, the Panthers hit a match-high .290 and turned down eight total blocks to win it 25-21.
Compas set a new career-high, and team-high, with 13 kills, while Omonije (11) and Davis (9) rounded out the Davidson leaders. The trio also combined for nine of the Wildcats' 11 total blocks.

Davidson will return to action quickly, with a match up against Appalachian State scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 15 inside Belk Arena. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
