Whitworth Breaks 18-year-old School Record at NCAA Southeast Regional

11/10/2023 1:27:00 PM | Women's Cross Country

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Davidson's Frances Whitworth could not have scripted a better finish as the senior set a new school record in the 6k with a time of 20:49.1 Friday morning at the 2023 NCAA Women's Cross Country Southeast Regional.

In addition to breaking the program's top time, which was set 18 years ago by Hall of Famer Brenna Burns '09, Whitworth came home 35th out of 246 competitors to pace the Wildcats.

"It has been such a rewarding season to see my progress after four years of hard work and determination after injury early on in my career at Davidson," Whitworth said. "I'm very proud of myself and this team for so much improvement this fall!"

It also marked the fifth time in six races this fall the 2023 all-conference performer topped her previous career best.

"This year the team made great strides which was evident in today's performances with another breakout run by Franny and Anne," commented Director of Women's Cross Country / Track & Field Jen Straub. "I look forward to seeing their performances continue to improve in both indoor and outdoor track."

Like Whitworth, junior Anne Berquist climbed Davidson's all-time list recording the program's 11th fastest time with a mark of 21:36.5, which was also a new personal record.

Molly Sullivan (22:43.1), Hallie Stewart (22.57.0) and Jocelyn Millican (23.28.7) also competed for the Wildcats, who finished in the middle of the pack.

NC State (52 points) claimed the team title by 30 points over Furman (82 points). The Wolfpacks' Katelyn Tuohy captured the individual title finishing in 19:29.8.
