Davidson Slowed by FDU in Hostilo Hoops Classic Finale

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Davidson women's basketball team dropped the final game of the Hostilo Hoops Community Classic, 49-43, against the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights on Wednesday afternoon. 
 
The Wildcats got off to a good start offensively in Wednesday's finale. Four different players got buckets to give Davidson an early 9-2 lead. Suzi-Rose Deegan, Sallie Schutz, Elle Sutphin, and Maddie Plank all got involved on the first few possessions.
 
The Knights fought back behind a 12-0 tear to end the first quarter which gave FDU a 17-13 lead heading into the second.  
 
At the start of the next quarter, Schutz knocked down a three and Sutphin connected on a midrange jumper, and the Wildcats regained the lead, 18-17. The Knights were quick to respond as they made back-to-back threes to move back in front 23-18.
 
Out of the intermission, Fairleigh Dickinson remained ahead, 34-26, with 5:20 on the clock. Davidson used the next three minutes to chip away and bring it to a one-possession game. The Wildcats used a 9-2 spurt with points from Sutphin, Deegan, and a three-pointer by Tomisin Adenupe to cut the deficit to 36-35 at the end of the third.
 
Deegan gave Davidson their first lead since the second quarter with a driving layup on the first possession of the final quarter, but FDU scored four in a row to move back ahead, 40-37 with 7:05 to play. Davidson cut it to a one-point game twice after made baskets from Plank and Schutz as three minutes remained in regulation.
 
The Knights came down the floor and knocked in a deep three to move their lead to four, 45-41 with 2:41 to play. Adenupe went to the free throw line with 1:21 to go and made both attempts to put Davidson within two, 45-43. These were the Wildcats' final points of the game as FDU went on to hold off Davidson, 49-43.

The 'Cats will be back in action on Sunday afternoon for a 2 p.m. tip off in Boone against Appalachian State.
