DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcats returned home for the first time in over a month this evening, taking on Atlantic 10 foe VCU, ultimately falling 3-1 after a back-and-forth battle. The 'Cats scratched their way to a first set, 25-19 victory, before dropping the next three, 25-21, 25-19 and 25-11.
Tonight's match took place inside Davidson's Vance Athletic Center, and marked the very first time since its 2015 inception that an official NCAA game was hosted there.
Remi Lehnertz highlighted the day for Davidson, recording the first double-double of her career with 10 kills and 10 digs. The senior's 10 digs also marked just the third time in her career where she tallied double-digit digs. Freshman Bella Brady had another rock solid night for the Wildcats, as the libero matched a career-high with 19 digs and also added four assists to her season total. Setters Jessie Doyal and Sydney Champaigne dished 14 sets apiece, while the duo also recorded five and six digs, respectively. At the net, Annalyse Kitzberger notched 10 kills of her own, while Madeline Wynn had a match-high four block assists.
The opening set got off to a quick start, as the 'Cats and Rams would exchange service errors before finding a groove. The two teams would continue to exchange points, and the lead, until VCU strung together two kills and an ace to build its largest lead of the day, up 10-6. From there however, the Wildcats hung tough and thanks to a kill from Julia Black, and a block from Black and Sola Omonije, Davidson pulled away to a 16-15 lead. A subsequent service ace from Brady would put the 'Cats up 17-15, for their largest lead of the day thus far. Several more kills down the stretch from Lehnertz, Wynn and Lauryn Abold allowed the Wildcats to pull off the 25-19 set one win, in conjunction with the team hitting .212 at the net during the first.
Davidson carried its momentum into the second, making a season-low two attack errors during the set. Despite trailing 22-15, Malia Kay went on a five-point service run that pulled the 'Cats back within two of the Rams and forced a VCU timeout. Down 22-20, Lehnertz tabbed one more kill before VCU eventually settled the score, winning the second 25-21 and tying the match up at 1-1.
VCU's offense took control for the remainder of the match, as the Rams hit .379 across the third and fourth sets to seal the 3-1 match victory.
The Wildcats will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 p.m. to take on the Rams again, inside the Vance Athletic Center.
