Wrestling Heads to SoCon Championship Sunday

BOONE, N.C. – Davidson wrestling heads to the 2020 Southern Conference Championship Sunday, Mar. 8 at the Holmes Convocation Center on the campus of Appalachian State. The tournament begins at 10 a.m. with the championship round slated to start at 7 p.m.

ABOUT DAVIDSON
- Leading the way for the 'Cats heading into the conference championship is 133 pounder, Kyle Gorant. Gorant boasts a record of 11-10, while going 4-3 in SoCon bouts. The sophomore has won five of his last eight bouts that included a four-match win streak.
- Freshman Cian Fischer has filled a much-needed hole at 125-pounds, winning 9 of 17 bouts after overcoming an early season injury. Fischer has pinned a team-high six opponents, three of those coming at the season-opening Southeast Open. He will be the highest seed for the 'Cats Sunday, earning the four seed at 125 pounds.
- Tony Palumbo '19 grappled all the way to the 157-pound final, helping Davidson to a sixth-place finish at the Holmes Convocation Center. The 'Cats advanced four out of the championship first round, a big improvement from the previous year.
- Davidson earned 22.5 points, up nearly 10 points from their 2018 result.
- All-Rookie Team selection, Kyle Gorant, placed fourth at 133-pounds, as did Conor Fenn at 184. Hunter Costa also had his hand raised in the championship first round with a thrilling sudden victory decision to open his win account at SoCon's.
- Cian Fischer was named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team, announced by the league Thursday morning.
- Fischer is just the third rookie (Kyle Gorant and Mitchell Trigg, 2019) to earn this distinction since Scott Patrick '15 was named to the 2011 SoCon rookie squad.
