DAVIDSON, N.C. – Wrestling got off to a strong start against nationally ranked number 14 Campbell, but the Camels prevailed in the end, 35-13, Sunday afternoon in a Southern Conference showdown at Belk Arena.
Wildcat sophomore Kyle Gorant picked up his team-leading 11th win of the season at 133-pounds, blanking Paxton Rose, 4-0. Gorant recorded a first period takedown, and after choosing bottom to start the second, broke free for an escape.
In the ensuing bout, Davidson freshman David Loniewski got a pair of early takedowns, the latter leading to his second fall in four matches as he dispatched Kyle Sams in 1:58. With the pin, the 'Cats took a 9-3 lead after three bouts.
Davidson struggled through the middle portion of the match, but sophomore heavyweight Mitchell Trigg ended the match on a high note. After a scoreless first frame, Trigg got things going in the second with an escape, stall points and a takedown. He finished with an impressive 8-0 major and moves to 2-2 in league bouts.
Next up for the 'Cats is the annual trip to the SoCon Championship from Boone, N.C. The first bout from Appalachian State's Holmes Convocation Center is slated for 10 a.m.
