Davidson Holds Off George Mason for 61-56 Road Win

FAIRFAX, Va. – In addition to holding George Mason to just 32 percent shooting, Kellan Grady scored 17 points and backcourt mate Jon Axel Gudmundsson added 13 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals to lead Davidson past the Patriots, 61-56, Wednesday evening at EagleBank Arena.
After the Wildcats used a 19-8 streak to push their advantage to as many as 15, 42-27, Mason responded with a spurt of its own to cut the deficit to 48-47 with 7:31 to play. The Wildcats answered with four straight, including a layup from Gudmundsson to push the margin back to five.
The Patriots were unable to get closer than a basket the rest of the way.
Dusan Kovacevic also played a major factor off the bench for Davidson (11-4, 2-0 A-10) with 6 points and 4 rebounds in just 8 minutes.
The two teams combined to go just 6-for-49 from behind the arc.
Both teams went through scoring droughts, before Davidson closed the opening half on a 10-3 run to carry a 23-17 lead into the break.
Along with missing their first seven field goal attempts, the Patriots finished the period 1-of-9 from the floor, while the 'Cats held them to just 21.7 percent (5-23) in the opening 20 minutes.
Justin Kier paced George Mason (8-8, 2-1 A-10) with a game-high 26 points to go along with 12 rebounds.
The Wildcats are off to a 2-0 start in league play for the first time since joining the Atlantic 10 in 2014.
