ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Despite Peyton Aldridge (45) and Kellan Grady (39) turning in personal bests and combining for 84 points, Davidson fell in triple overtime at St. Bonaventure, 117-113, Tuesday evening at the Reilly Center.
In their final home contest, seniors Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley led the Bonnies with 34 and 33 points, respectively. Courtney Stockard, who scored the first 17 points of the game for St. Bonaventure (23-6, 13-4 A-10), which has won 11 straight, also went over the 30-point plateau with 31.
In addition to passing former teammate Jack Gibbs '17 (2,036) and Fred Hetzel '65 (2,032) to move into third on Davidson's all-time scoring list with 2,069 career points, Aldridge's 45-point effort was the fifth best in a single-game by a Wildcat. It was also the most by an Atlantic 10 player this season.
The two-time all-conference performer finished 14-of-22 from the floor, drilled a career-high 8 3-pointers and grabbed 12 rebounds in 51 minutes for his fifth straight double-double.
Grady, the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week, made 10 field goals and connected on a school record 16-of-16 free throws in 53 minutes. Backcourt mate Jon Axel Gudmundsson also logged all but 2 minutes for the 'Cats and flirted with a triple-double, posting 14 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists.
The battle of the league's two second-place teams coming in featured 15 ties and 23 lead changes.
Davidson (17-11, 12-5 A-10) finished 16-of-40 from long range and made an impressive 29-of-32 at the charity stripe.
The Bonnies also hit 40 percent (14-35) of their 3-point attempts and got to the line 15 more times, making 35, including 18-of-27 after regulation.
First Half Summary
St. Bonaventure raced out to a 19-4 lead highlighted by Stockard's four treys, 3-point play and layup to start the game. After Davidson reeled off eight unanswered, the Bonnies stretched the margin back to double digits.
Down 30-17 with under 8 minutes to play in the opening half, the Wildcats closed with a 24-7 streak to take a 41-37 lead into the break. Aldridge (18) and Grady (16) combined for 34 points in the period and seven 3-pointers.
Second Half Summary
Gudmundsson scored the first bucket of the half to give Davidson its largest lead, 43-37. After the Bonnies used an 8-2 spurt to tie the score, 45-45, neither team led by more than four the rest of the frame.
The two teams would trade the lead 12 times in the period before LaDarien Griffin made a layup with five seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.
First Overtime Summary
St. Bonaventure drilled four 3-pointers in the first overtime, including one from Mobley with 56 ticks left to put his club up, 90-86.
Aldridge answered with another triple before Grady's clutch free throws with 3.2 seconds left on the clock put the 'Cats in their first double overtime contest since the 2012 Southern Conference Championship.
Second Overtime Summary
Tied 91-91, the Bonnies quickly went up 96-91 with five straight points from Mobley. St. Bonaventure's largest lead since the first half did not last long as Gudmundsson and Grady evened the score with a 3-pointer and layup in consecutive possessions.
Just like he did in the first extra session, Grady made two more free throws, this time with 19 seconds to go, to send the game into a third overtime.
Third Overtime Summary
This time, it was the Wildcats that grabbed the early lead, 104-100, but shortly after Aldridge picked up his fifth foul with under 4 minutes remaining.
Following a pair of Rusty Reigel free throws that gave Davidson a 108-105 advantage at the 2:49 mark, the Bonnies reeled off seven straight points to take the lead for good.
Up Next
Davidson will conclude its 2017-18 regular season with an 8 p.m. "Senior Night" tip against nationally-ranked Rhode Island Friday inside Belk Arena. The game will be televised by CBS Sports Network.
