DAVIDSON, N.C. – Peyton Aldridge scored 23 of his career-high 38 points in the first half and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Davidson past UMass, 83-78, in Atlantic 10 action Saturday inside John M. Belk Arena.

Aldridge, who hit the 20-point plateau in the first half for the second straight home game, finished 13-of-21 from the floor and 9-of-10 at the line.

As a team, the Wildcats shot 55.1 percent overall and finished with a 35-25 margin on the glass.

Kellan Grady and Will Magarity also finished in double figures for Davidson (15-10, 10-4 A-10) with 12 and 11, respectively. Jon Axel Gudmundsson turned in a solid performance with 7 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists.

The Wildcats broke open a 47-47 deadlock with an 18-5 spurt to take their largest lead, 65-52, with 8:07 remaining.

Davidson went 21-of-28 from the charity stripe, but made just 5-of-10 in the closing minutes, which to allowed the Minutemen to cut the deficit to four, with five seconds left.

Luwane Pipkins paced UMass (11-16, 4-10 A-10) with 31 points, including five of his team's 12 3-pointers.

The 'Cats, who trailed 29-21 with 6:31 left in the opening half, closed the period on a 20-7 run to take a 41-36 advantage into the break.

Davidson will conclude its brief homestand Wednesday with a 7 p.m. tip against Fordham. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a Bob McKillop 'Bob'blehead.
