DAVIDSON, N.C. — Freshman Axel Fries won his team-best eighth straight match and the Davidson men's tennis team won its eighth match overall with a 6-1 victory against Presbyterian Saturday afternoon inside Knobloch Tennis Center.
Â
"This was a solid team we defeated today," said head coach Drew Barrett, who collected his 101st win at Davidson. "We competed extremely well and the guys were very focused. They are continuing to focus on improving every day and it showed today."
Â
The match opened with a tight battle in doubles action before the Wildcats (8-2) used a 7-4 tie-breaker win at No. 1 by Fries and J.B. Gough to win the team point. The duo ran their record to 7-3 on the season.
Â
The other doubles win came from Artem Khrapko and David Hager at No. 3, securing their third win together this season with a 6-4 victory.
Â
Singles was just like doubles with Davidson battling to the end of each match before securing the team win. Fries led the charge by coming back from a set down (6-4) to earn a 6-3 second-set victory followed by an 11-9 super tie-breaker triumph to move his record to 9-1 on the season.
Â
Shamael Chaudhry improved to 7-3 with a 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 1, while Hager netted his eighth win of the season after a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 victory at No. 2.
Â
Khrapko and Gough both needed a third set to score their fifth and sixth wins, respectively. The junior Khrapko took the first set, 7-5, but fell in a 6-4 second-set match to force the final set. He secured a 6-4 decision to move to 5-2 at No. 3 singles.
Â
Gough came back from dropping the first set, 6-3, to nail down 6-4 and 6-2 sets to run his record to 6-2.
Â
Davidson heads on the road for a pair of matches next weekend, going to Radford Feb. 25 before playing at VCU the next day in an Atlantic 10 match.
