DAVIDSON, N.C. — In its final regular season match, Davidson fell just short in a 4-3 setback to College of Charleston Sunday afternoon for Senior Day in men's tennis action at the Davidson Tennis Courts.
"Tough one today for the guys," said head coach Drew Barrett. "We didn't start out well, but battled back in singles. CofC is a really good team and we gave it our best today. I think we have some good momentum heading into the A-10 Tournament next week."
The Wildcats' (11-9) senior duo of Evan Watkins and Alex Howard played their final career home match. They teamed together at No. 2 doubles and were up 5-4 when the doubles point was decided, so they did not finish out the match. The pair enters the Atlantic 10 Tournament with a 5-7 record, 4-4 at No. 2.
CofC (15-6) grabbed the doubles point with 6-4 and 6-3 wins at No. 1 and 3 position. It proved to be the difference as both teams won three singles spots each.
Artem Khrapko, David Hager and Jack Riazzi picked up wins for Davidson's three team points. Khrapko closed out the regular season with a strong 6-4, 6-3 decision to win his 11th match of the season.
Hager capped off a perfect weekend when his opponent retired. The sophomore dropped a tie-breaker in the first set, but came back to win 6-1 in the next set and was up 2-1 when the Cougars' Rodrigo Encinas retired. Hager went 3-0 for the week to push his record to 13-5, going 7-1 in his final eight regular-season matches.
Riazzi matched Hager for the team lead in wins at 13 when the sophomore won his second in a row with a 6-4, 6-4 decision at No. 6. He is 13-6 on the year and has gone 8-2 in his past 10 matches.
Davidson, which finished 6-5 at home and 4-4 on the road, now gears up for the Atlantic 10 Tournament next week, April 14-17, at Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
