DAVIDSON, N.C. — Opening its Atlantic 10 schedule at home, Davidson fell just short in a close battle with Richmond Sunday afternoon in a 4-3 defeat in the Knobloch Tennis Center.
Â
Davidson fell to 2-4 overall, while Richmond moved to 3-4 and won its second straight in the all-time series.
Â
"The guys had a great effort after struggling in the doubles point," said head coach Drew Barrett. "We showed a lot of heart to make a run on Richmond. We are starting to gain some confidence as we begin the outdoor portion of the season."
Â
After dropping the doubles point with 6-4 and 6-1 defeats at No. 2 and 3 positions, Davidson hung tough in singles action. Scoring the three team points was Artem Khrapko, J.B. Gough and Jack Riazzi, who each earned their third straight singles wins.
Â
At No. 2, Khrapko picked in a 6-4, 6-3 win to even his overall record at 3-3 on the season. Right behind him was Gough at No. 3 singles, registering a 7-6, 6-3 victory to tie for the team lead with four wins on the year.
Â
Riazzi picked up a super tie-breaker win to determine his match at No. 6 after splitting his first two sets by scores of 6-3 and 3-6. The sophomore is 3-2 on the season.
Â
Davidson begins a three-match road trip by play at Presbyterian next weekend, Feb. 20.
