Richmond Holds off Wildcats in A-10 Opener, 82-80

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Richmond's ShawnDre' Jones scored 21 points and T.J. Cline just missed a triple-double with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists as the Spiders held off Davidson, 82-80, in both team's Atlantic 10 men's basketball opener Saturday at Belk Arena.
 
As a team, Richmond (7-6, 1-0 A-10) shot 53.2 percent, including a 12-of-27 effort from behind the arc.
 
Despite the loss, Peyton Aldridge finished with his sixth career double-double (21 pts, 11 rebs), while Jack Gibbs also had 21 points for the Wildcats.
 
Trailing 79-64, Davidson (7-5, 0-1 A-10) got consecutive treys from Jon Axel Gudmundsson and Gibbs to spark a 15-2 spurt and cut the deficit to 81-79 with 25 seconds remaining. The Spiders were unable to put the game away missing the front end of three straight one-and-ones.
 
The Wildcats had separate chances to tie the game or take the lead with under 10 seconds to play, but were unable to convert.
 
De'Monte Buckingham (15), Nick Sherod (13) and Khwan Fore (10) also added double figures for the Spiders.
 
In addition to opening the second half on an 11-0 spurt, Richmond started 11-of-14 (5 3-pointers) from the floor to open up a 67-50 advantage. The Spiders finished the period 7-of-10 from long range.
 
Winners of 38 of its last 40 at home coming in, Davidson shot 46.6 percent overall and finished 18-of-23 from the charity stripe.
 
The two teams traded early runs before Richmond carried a 39-36 lead into the half.
 
Up Next
Davidson will play its next two on the road beginning with a 7 p.m. tip at George Washington on Thursday evening.
