DALLAS, Texas – Playing in her home state of Texas, senior Caroline Brown recorded her fourth double-double in as many matches to lead the Davidson volleyball team to a 3-1 defeat of Sam Houston State in the first game of the SMU Invite Friday morning at the SMU Dedman Center. The victory, won by set scores of 25-22, 25-21, 23-25 and 25-13, pushes the Wildcats to 4-0 on the season.

"We're thrilled to get a win against SHSU today," said head coach Chris Willis. "They play a different style of offense and it took a lot of focus and discipline to defend them. We had more errors than we normally do and we got a lot cleaner as the match went on. Hopefully, our blocking and offense continue to improve."

Brown led the team with 18 kills and was second with 21 digs. In addition, she recorded a trio of assists and hit .267 as the 'Cats also hit .267 as a team. Anastasia Owen had a team-high 23 digs and a pair of service aces as well as a pair of assists, though it was Mikayla Derochie who's 46 assists led the way.

Hannah Rau slammed down nine kills and picked up seven digs, while Emily Franklin, Rachel Earnhardt and Tindall Sewell each finished with six kills in the match. Earnhardt also added a trio of aces, while Franklin led the team with a .500 hitting percentage.

Overall, the Wildcats finished with 56 kills and 74 digs, making 5.0 team blocks. The squad also served up seven aces.

Sam Houston State finished the game hitting .138 as a team with 7.0 team blocks. Haley Neisler led the Bearkats with 16 kills, hitting .469. Tayler Gray had 43 assists and 20 digs.

A block by Derochie and Sewell started a 5-1 run for the Wildcats that put the score at 6-3 in their favor. SHSU came back to take a 9-7 lead. The teams traded points to keep the score close before Davidson slammed home four of the last five points to take the 25-22 set victory for the 1-0 match lead.

The second set featured the same balanced scoring as the first, with the Wildcats taking a slim 14-10 lead on a fill by Brown from Derochie. The Bearkats called timeout, but it would take them awhile to battle back as they narrowed the deficit to just one point at 19-20. The Wildcats collected themselves during a timeout of their own, combining three kills with a pair of Bearkat errors to take a 2-0 lead after claiming set number two 25-21.

Davidson put up yet another battle to start the third set, as the squad once again traded scores to play to a 9-9 tie. A Bearkat error pushed the Wildcats into a 16-12 lead, which the 'Cats kept through a score of 20-16. However, Davidson suffered a breakdown in the final points and could not close out the set as the Bearkats rallied to knot the set at 22-all before a pair of kills gave them the 25-23 set victory.

The Wildcats rallied back in the fourth set, jumping out to an early 12-5 lead with a kill by Sewell from Derochie. Sam Houston State could never quite cut the deficit from then on. The 'Cats rattled off six straight points to then take a 22-12 advantage before an ace by Pisel and a Bearkat error closed things out on a 25-13 Davidson set win and hand the 'Cats the 3-1 overall triumph.

Davidson will face host Southern Methodist later in the day. The Wildcats and the Mustangs will square off at 7 p.m. central time in the SMU Dedman Center.
