Gardner-Webb Defeats Wrestling in SoCon Match

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb wrestlers claimed eight of 10 bouts en route to a 29-6 victory over Davidson in Southern Conference wrestling action Tuesday night in Paul Porter Arena.
Sophomore Philip Elias, who has won five out of his last six matches, defeated Cortez Starkes, 5-4, at 125 pounds in the first match of the night to give Davidson (5-6, 0-2 SoCon) an early 3-0 lead, but Gardner-Webb (3-6, 1-2 SoCon) won the next six matches, earning major decisions from Alex Medved (157 pounds) and Justin Guthrie (165) and a pin by Hunter Gamble (174) in six minutes flat, to put the meet out of reach.
Freshman Carson Stack took advantage of an unsportsmanlike conduct point deduction at 197 pounds to also earn a one-point victory for the Wildcats, but Travis Porter earned a major decision at heavyweight for the Runnin' Bulldogs, 12-0, for the final margin.
Davidson will host a tri-meet Sunday in Belk Arena that will feature Boston University and SoCon foe VMI. The tri-meet will begin with the two visitors at 1:00 p.m., then Davidson will challenge BU at 2:30 p.m. and VMI 10 minutes after the completion of the BU match.
