GREENVILLE, S.C. — In a match that went down to the wire, senior Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) nearly gave the Wildcats a regular-season ending win, but fell in three sets to Tyler Droll giving Furman the 4-3 win on Thursday afternoon at Mickel Tennis Center in Southern Conference men's tennis action.
The Wildcats close the regular season at 6-17 overall and 2-8 in the SoCon, while Furman improved to 7-16, 5-4 in league play.
After Davidson had tied things up at 3-all when Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) won his sixth three-set match of the year by the score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1, the match between Lyons and Droll set up for the final point.
Lyons came back from dropping a 7-6 decision in the first set with a 6-1 triumph in set two to force the final set. Droll though, sealed up the final team point, and the match, with a 6-3 decision in the third set.
Davidson started the match with a 1-0 lead after scoring wins at the No. 1 and 3 doubles spots. It was the 10th time in the last 11 matches the 'Cats have captured the doubles point. They are 15-12 overall in league matches, led by the duo of Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.) and Kevin Moore (Overland Park, Kan.) with a 5-2 record. That pair earned an 8-6 win at No. 3 as they finished 7-8 in the regular season.
Schafer and Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) picked up the Wildcats other doubles win with an 8-4 victory to run their record to 9-10 overall and 5-4 in league play.
Picking up the final Wildcat point on the afternoon was Mark, who took Andrew Mellow to a pair of tie-breakers, winning both of them 7-6, 7-6. The sophomore picked up his 10th singles win and ran his league record to 6-4.
Schafer closed the season with a team-best 11 singles wins, nine of them at the No. 1 position.
The Wildcats will now gear up for the SoCon Tournament, which takes place in Chattanooga, Tenn., this year. The tournament runs from April 20-23.
