Turnovers Hurt Davidson in 77-69 Loss at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Trevis Simpson scored 33 points off the bench, and UNCG shot 59 percent in the second half in a 77-69 Southern Conference men's basketball victory over Davidson Monday night at the Greensboro Coliseum.

JP Kuhlman scored 19 points to lead the Wildcats (8-10, 2-5 SoCon), and Jake Cohen posted 16 points and eight rebounds. Nik Cochran scored 10 points off the bench.

Simpson was 12-for-15 from the floor, 4-of-6 from 3-point land and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line for the Spartans (2-15, 2-5 SoCon). Aaron Brackett finished with 11 points and eight boards.

The Spartans forced 19 turnovers, scoring 12 points off them in the second half, and had eight blocked shots in the game. UNCG also held the 'Cats to 39 percent shooting in the contest while shooting 48 percent, including 16-for-27 in the second frame.

The Wildcats led 35-28 at halftime and had a 10-point cushion early in the second half. Trailing by seven, the Spartans erupted for a 20-4 run to open a 58-49 advantage with 9:50 remaining. Simpson scored nine points, while Davidson committed five turnovers during the stretch.

The margin ballooned to 13 points before Davidson made a run late in the contest. A 6-2 run, capped by a Tom Droney layup, made the score 73-67 with 39 seconds left. But the Spartans broke out of the 'Cats' press, and Brendan McKillop was whistled for an intentional foul trying to take away the easy layup.

Brackett made 1-of-2 from the line and was fouled again on the Spartans' ensuing possession. He hit 1-of-2, making the margin eight points with 34 seconds left and putting the game away.

Davidson opened a seven-point lead at the break by making 7-of-13 3-point tries in the first period. Cohen had three and Cochran had two. The 'Cats shot 39 percent from the field but 54 percent from long distance in the stanza.

The Wildcats return to action at Elon Thursday night, and tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Game Notes: The win broke UNCG's nine-game losing skid against Davidson… Brendan McKillop needs 11 3-pointers to move into the top-5 at Davidson… The Spartan bench outscored Davidson's 42-10.
