Men's Basketball Takes Fourth in Honda Puerto Rico Tip-Off

SAN JUAN, P.R. - #JP Kuhlman# posted 16 points and nine rebounds and Davidson led tip to horn in a 64-51 men's basketball victory over Western Kentucky in the Honda Puerto Rico Tip-Off Sunday afternoon. The victory gives the Wildcats (2-2) fourth place in the eight-team tournament.

Jake Cohen and De'Mon Brooks each scored 10 points, and Clint Mann collected nine points and nine boards. Jordan Downing netted eight points, and Frank Ben-Eze collected eight rebounds.

Juan Pattillo led Western Kentucky (3-2) with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Steffphon Pettigrew scored 11 points.

The Wildcats held the Hilltoppers to 30.9 percent shooting from the field, including 28.6 in the first half. The 'Cats also held a 45-34 edge on the glass.

Davidson got layups on its first three possessions of the game en route to opening an 18-4 lead 8:17 into the first half. Kuhlman scored five points, and Brooks netted six during the stretch.

Western Kentucky closed the frame with a 9-3 run, sparked by a Pattillo fast-break dunk, and trailed 28-22 at the break.

The Wildcats led by seven points midway through the second half when Downing entered the game for the first time. The freshman scored six straight points to push the margin to 49-36.

The Hilltoppers again worked the margin down to seven with 7:23 remaining, but Kuhlman and Mann made consecutive layups. After a Pettigrew 3-pointer, Downing added another jumper, and Brendan McKillop hit a triple to push the lead to 60-47 with 3:39 to go. The cushion never went below double digits after that point.

Davidson finishes a five-game road swing at Rhode Island next Saturday, Nov. 27, at 2 p.m.

Game Notes: McKillop needs one triple to move into 10th on Davidson's career 3-pointer chart. It was the first time Davidson and Western Kentucky have played since 1978… Davidson improved to 54-69 all-time in in-season tournaments.
