DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Despite 16 kills from senior outside hitter Sarabeth Peele and a double-double from sophomore setter Ariel Ley, the Georgia Southern Eagles got by the Davidson Wildcats, 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-23) in midweek SoCon action at Belk Arena Thursday night.
Peele finished with 16 kills to lead all hitters, while senior middle blocker Jorden Benedict added seven on just 11 attacks. Davidson (13-12, 4-4) also got a double double from Ley, who finished with 18 assists and a match-high 11 digs. Senior setter Hayley Lawson also tallied 18 assists.
Bethany Sanford was the lone hitter in double figures for Georgia Southern (16-7, 7-1), finishing with 13 kills on 26 swings. The Eagles also got nine kills from Nicole Jeschelnik, while Kate Van Dyke finished with 27 assists. Ashley Roe led the Eagle defense with 10 digs.
Peele's first kill of the match busted an 8-8 stalemate, and with Benedict serving, she scored the next four points before an ace pushed Davidson's lead to 14-9. The Eagles answered with a 9-2 run to tie the set at 17, and the teams traded points until two straight Wildcat attack errors put the Eagles ahead, 21-19. Trailing 22-20, Davidson knotted the score on a pair of Eagle errors and another ace from Benedict gave the 'Cats a one-point lead, 23-22. Two Davidson errors put Georgia Southern in control, 24-23, but a block from Lawson forced the extra time. Parker Small and Van Dyke, though, got the next two points to deliver the 26-24 win for the Eagles.
Trailing 4-1 to start the second set, Davidson got the score tied at seven on a kill from Peele and an Eagle error. The 'Cats took a 9-7 lead on back-to-back kills from Peele and Lawson but Georgia Southern took a commanding 18-11 lead with an 11-2 run. Two straight punch outs by Peele helped Davidson survive two straight set points, but Jeschelnik put away the winner for the 25-19 victory to go ahead 2-0 in the match.
The Wildcats started the final frame in a 7-0 hole, but fought back to get within two, 14-12 on a kill from Ley and an Eagle error. Georgia Southern won the next four to pull back ahead 18-12, but Davidson used a 6-3 run to narrow the lead to 23-20 and put up a fight at the end of the match. A kill by Hannah Nelson gave Georgia Southern a match-point chance at 24-21 but back-to-back kills from Peele extended play, as the 'Cats fought off two straight match points, until a Wildcat service error ended the match with the 25-23 Georgia Southern win.
Davidson will hit the road this weekend for a pair of matches, starting at Appalachian State Saturday at 7 p.m. and finishing at Western Carolina Sunday at 3 p.m.
