DAVIDSON, N.C. - In their first Southern Conference action since the season opener, the Davidson wrestling team will take on VMI on Sunday, Jan. 25. The conference home opener for the Wildcats will begin at 1 p.m. at Belk Arena.
Scouting the Wildcats: Davidson comes into the match with a record of 3-8 in dual meets, and will be searching for their first SoCon win after falling to Chattanooga in their only other conference match earlier this season. In their last action, the 'Cats dropped a 29-10 decision to North Carolina, a match that was highlighted by freshman David DeCamp's first career pin. Their last victory came when they took down perennial national power Lock Haven, 21-15, in a win that garnered national attention. The Wildcats used victories in four of the final six matches to secure the team win, including an 8-7 decision at 285 by Charlie Wolff to give the 'Cats the final lead. Kevin Cook, Thomas Jasterzbski, and Carl Sandercock also scored points for Davidson, thwarting a possible Lock Haven comeback. The 'Cats are led by sophomore Vitaly Radsky, who sports an 11-7 overall record and has earned a team-high 25 dual meet points. Radsky, who was named SoCon Wrestler of the Week earlier this year, had a nine-match winning streak and has been victorious in nine of his last 11 matches. Junior Ben Altman leads the squad with 14 wins overall, and has earned 20 points in 11 dual matches.
Scouting the Keydets: VMI fell to George Mason, 31-12, in their most recent match to drop their record to 0-5 overall, and 0-1 in the SoCon after losing 35-9 to UNC Greensboro on Jan. 14. The Keydets are one of the youngest teams in the nation, with 18 newcomers on this season's roster, and only a pair of seniors. They return seven letterwinners from last year's 6-8 squad. Senior heavyweight Leon Barrow has the best record on the team, coming into Sunday with a 15-8 overall mark, and 1-2 in dual meets. In his first season as a collegiate, freshman Michael Bowman has gone 10-9 at both 133 and 141 to tally a team-high 20 points, with three pins. Leading the team with four pins is fellow freshman Vinnie Gallo, who has dropped his opponent in four of his five overall victories.
The Series: These two teams will be facing off for the 33rd time in the history of the series, with the first matchup coming in the opening match of Davidson's inaugural season, 1963-64. The Wildcats will be looking to break a two-match losing streak to the Keydets, dating back to a 19-19 tie on Jan. 18, 2006.
Up Next: The Wildcats will continue a three-match home stand when they face off against UNC Greensboro on Jan. 29 in Belk Arena. The SoCon matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m.
