CHARLESTON, S.C. – Zach Kayne, Matt Webb and Danny Weiss each collected two hits, but a five-run fifth inning proved to be the difference in The Citadel's 12-7 SoCon baseball victory over Davidson at Riley Park Sunday afternoon.
Kayne went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, while Webb was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles. Weiss was 2-for-5 with two runs, and Tommy Piacenza went 1-for-4 with four RBIs.
The score was tied 7-7 in the fifth, when Chris McGuiness stroked a two-run homer with no outs to ignite a five-run inning for the Bulldogs (22-13, 10-5 SoCon). A Kyle Jordan double drove in another run, and consecutive singles by Bryan Altman and Sonny Meade capped the rally.
Bulldog relievers Raymond Copenhaver and Matt Reifsnider combined to give up one hit and allow three base runners for the last four innings to preserve the victory.
The Wildcats (8-22, 1-11 SoCon) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Kayne drew a one-out walk, and Webb followed with an RBI double. Weiss plated Webb with a single, and Piacenza drove in two runs with a double later in the frame.
After The Citadel got on the scoreboard with three runs in the second, Davidson came back with two in the third. Weiss and Chase FitzPatrick led off the inning with consecutive singles, and a Chris FitzPatrick sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. Both runners scored as Piacenza reached on an error, giving the 'Cats a 6-3 lead.
The Bulldogs tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the third, but Davidson retook a 7-6 lead in the fourth when Kayne drew a leadoff walk, went to third on a Webb double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chase FitzPatrick. The Citadel tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Brad Felder led off with a double and scored later in the inning on a ground out.
The contest completes an eight-game road trip for the Wildcats, who return to action at Wilson Field against Wake Forest Tuesday, April 15, at 6 p.m. That game begins a five-game homestand as Davidson hosts Georgia Southern in a three-game SoCon series, beginning April 18.
