DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's basketball team looks to finish out the month of December and the 2008 calendar year on a winning note when they play host to Wofford on Tuesday evening at John M. Belk Arena.
The Opening Tip
Davidson (4-8, 3-0 SoCon), will look to move to 4-0 in Southern Conference play for the second time in the past three years when it hosts Wofford (1-9, 0-3 SoCon) on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 7 p.m.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The series has Davidson leading 20-11 after sweeping last year's two-game series. The Wildcats have won 13 of the past 14 contests in the series, with their only set back coming in a 68-65 overtime loss on Jan. 17, 2007.
In their last meeting, Davidson survived an overtime affair when sophomore Alex Thompson hit a huge three-ball from the right wing with 1:22 left in overtime that gave the 'Cats the lead for good and she added two free throws to close out the scoring for an 84-76 win. Junior Julia Paquette scored a career-high 23 points in the win.
Scouting the Wildcats
•Davidson is coming off a nine-day break for Christmas, having last played on Dec. 21.
•The Wildcats finished off their non-conference slate of games this year with contests at Xavier (L, 84-60) and Cincinnati (L, 60-42) on the 19th and 21st. They went just 1-8 in those games, but to their credit, those non-conference teams have compiled a 68-34 combined record, and all but Winthrop and South Carolina have winning percentages above .500.
•Mercedes Robinson led the charge at Cincinnati with her fifth double-double of the season on team bests of 21 points and 13 rebounds. For her career, Robinson has 22 double doubles.
•Robinson (14.3 ppg, fourth-best in the SoCon) is joined by Ashley Lax (11.9) and Thompson (10.4) as the three Wildcats averaging double digits in points. Davidson is the only team in the SoCon with three scorers in the top-15.
•The duo of Robinson and Thompson rank in the top-five in a number of league categories. Robinson is tops in rpg at 9.2, 4th in scoring, 5th in free throw percentage (.805) and 6th in steals (2.1 spg). Thompson leads the SoCon in assists (4.6 apg/55 total), made 3-pointers (26), and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5)
•With their 41 rebounds at Cincinnati, the Wildcats have hit the 40-board mark seven times this year.
•Along with Robinson, junior Julia Paquette has led the charge on the boards. In five of the past six games she has hauled in at least six rebounds. She averages 6.2 rpg on the season (11th in the SoCon).
•Davidson has hauled in at least 10 offensive rebounds in six of the past seven contests.
•Davidson looks to match the 2006-07 team in starting SoCon play a perfect 4-0. No Wildcat team has ever won their first five league games in program history.
•The Wildcats have won 13 of the past 14 meetings vs. Wofford, including last year's two-game sweep.
•Two seasons ago (Jan. 20, 2007), Davidson earned its biggest league win in school history with an 86-39 home win over Wofford.
•In their last meeting vs. Wofford at John Belk Arena, Davidson took a 70-58 decision behind Robinson's double-double as the 'Cats outscored the Terriers, 38-26, in the second half to seal the win. Robinson has registered three career double doubles against the Terriers, including one each in last year's two-game series sweep.
Scouting the Terriers
•Wofford (1-9, 0-3 SoCon) is on a five-game losing streak after dropping a 74-66 decision at Bucknell on Dec. 19.
•The Terriers lone win this year came against Gardner-Webb by the count of 78-72, Dec. 2.
•The Terriers placed four players in double figures at Bucknell, led by Kelly Dwyer's career-high tying 16 points.
•Dwyer is tied for the team-lead in scoring at 9.5 ppg and has paced Wofford in scoring in two of the past three contests.
•Matching Dwyer in points per game is Mahagony Williams. The 6-0 sophomore also tops the team in rebounding at 6.6 per game and had a season-high 13 boards at Bucknell.
•Williams' last meeting vs. the Wildcats saw her double things up with 12 points and a career-high 17 rebounds.
•Williams has tallied three double doubles this year.
•Liz Miller has enjoyed playing against the Wildcats having averaged 11.4 ppg in the last five meetings and hauling in totals of 27 rebounds and dishing out 16 assists.
•This will be the Terriers first road league game of the season. Last year saw them go 0-9 on the road vs. the conference.
•Wofford returns 11 of its 12 letterwinners from last year's 10-21 team. It also returns all five starters.
