DAVIDSON, N.C. – Stephen Curry scored 39 points, and the Davidson defense held Florida Atlantic to 28 percent shooting in the second half in a 76-60 men's basketball victory Monday night in the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off.
It was Davidson's 20th consecutive win at Belk Arena and Curry's ninth straight game with 25 or more points. The junior was 13-for-21 from the field, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range, and hit 8-of-9 free throws for the No. 24/25 Wildcats (4-1).
Andrew Lovedale collected his second straight double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds, and Bryant Barr scored 13 points. Steve Rossiter corralled 12 rebounds as Davidson held a 49-38 advantage on the glass, including 20 on the offensive end, which resulted in 17 second-chance points.
Xavier Perkins led Florida Atlantic (3-2) with 24 points and eight rebounds, while Shavar Richardson recorded 19 points and seven boards.
Trailing by 11 points at the break, Florida Atlantic opened the second frame with a 9-3 run to trim the lead to 44-39 after a Richardson jumper. The Wildcats responded with a 13-1 spurt, in which Curry scored 10, to push the lead to 57-40.
The cushion grew to as many as 19 points before the Owls used a 12-3 run, capped by a Perkins trey, to make the score 66-56 with 7:12 left in the game. But Florida Atlantic would get no closer as Davidson held the Owls without a field goal for the rest of the contest (0-for-4, 4 turnovers) to earn the victory.
Leading 20-15, Davidson went on an 11-2 run, capped by a pair of Lovedale free throws, to give the Wildcats a 31-17 edge with 7:43 left in the first half.
The margin grew to 15 points after a Will Archambault layup with 2:36 remaining, but the Owls outscored Davidson 7-3 for the rest of the frame, trimming the halftime cushion to 41-30.
Davidson is back in action Tuesday night as the 'Cats host Loyola in the nightcap of a Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off doubleheader at Belk Arena. The Wildcats will play at 8 p.m., while Florida Atlantic will take on James Madison at 5:45 p.m.
Game Notes: Tuesday's game will be Davidson's sixth in the last 12 days… It was Curry's fourth straight game with 30+ points… It was Lovedale's 12th career double-double and third this season… Rossiter and Archambault (7) had career highs in rebounds.
