GREENVILLE, S.C. – Four Davidson players reached double figures in the scoring column, and the Wildcats' defense stifled the Furman attack in a 73-51 SoCon men's basketball victory at Timmons Arena Wednesday night.
Stephen Curry led Davidson (9-6, 7-0) with 14 points and seven rebounds, and Jason Richards added 11 points and eight assists. Boris Meno and Will Archambault contributed 12 and 10 points off the bench, respectively, and Andrew Lovedale collected eight points and five boards.
Tonight, it was defense that carried the Wildcats in their third consecutive road win. Davidson forced Furman to shoot just 35.3 percent from the field, including 4-of-19 from 3-point range. The 'Cats also used Furman (2-15, 1-7) turnovers to get going offensively, scoring 22 points off 16 miscues.
Davidson started hot for the second straight game and hit its first five shots en route to opening a 21-8 advantage. Curry scored nine points in the opening 6:14. The 'Cats went through a bit of a sloppy stretch and Furman got hot, putting together a 10-3 run to trim the margin to 24-18 on an Alex Opacic layup with 5:40 left in the half.
Davidson responded with a 13-2 spurt, capped by a backdoor cut and dunk by Archambault as the buzzer sounded for halftime, and the 'Cats led 37-20 at intermission. It was the Paladins' lowest total since scoring 19 in the first half against Bowling Green in the fifth game of the season.
After Opacic scored the opening basket of the second frame, Thomas Sander sparked a 10-2 run that gave Davidson a 47-22 cushion 3:48 into the frame. The 25-point lead would prove to be the Wildcats' largest of the game, and Furman never got closer than 17 the rest of the way.
After a three-game road trip, the Wildcats return home to play Chattanooga Saturday at 2 p.m. in John M. Belk Arena. Over 100 men's basketball alumni will be on hand, and there will be an autograph session on the arena floor following the contest.
