SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Stephen Curry led three Wildcats in double figures with 26 points, and Davidson played a near flawless game on both ends of the floor in an 85-50 SoCon men's basketball victory over Wofford Saturday night in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Will Archambault netted a season-high 15 points for Davidson (8-6, 6-0), and Jason Richards posted 12 points and six assists. Thomas Sander finished with eight points, and Stephen Rossiter collected eight points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Davidson shook off a poor offensive performance at Elon Wednesday and shot a blistering 63.2 percent from the field, including 10-for-20 from 3-point range to run away from the Terriers. Defensively, the Terriers' 50 points matched the least Davidson has allowed this season.
The Wildcats opened the game by scoring on eight of their first 10 possessions and did not miss a shot from the floor until the 12:43 mark. On the other side of the court, Davidson allowed just two field goals in the first 7:55 en route to a 21-5 cushion. Curry and Richards combined for 13 points in the spurt.
An 11-3 run, bookended by a pair of Richards 3-pointers, gave Davidson a decisive 39-16 cushion. The Terriers (8-7, 1-4) used a mini 9-4 stretch to trim the margin to 18 points, but a floater from Archambault made the score 45-25 at the break. The Wildcats shot 18-for-29 from the floor and 7-for-11 from 3-point range in the period.
The second stanza began very much like the first as Davidson forced turnovers on the Wofford's first three possessions. That sparked an 18-4 Wildcat run, which featured seven straight points from Curry and was capped by consecutive Rossiter buckets. That stretch proved to be the knockout blow as Davidson led 63-29 early in the second half. The 'Cats largest lead was 43 points at 83-40 with three minutes to play.
The Wildcats continue their three-game conference road swing at Furman Wednesday, Jan. 16, in a 7 p.m. contest.
Game Notes: Davidson starts SoCon play with a 6-0 mark for the second straight season and fourth time under coach Bob McKillop… Davidson extended its regular-season conference win streak to 16… Lovedale made his fourth consecutive start… Four of the next five are on the road for the Wildcats… Curry reached the 20-point mark for the 29th time in his career.
