L.D. Simmons
L. D. Simmons is the golf team’s mental performance coach.  L. D. received his undergraduate degree from Davidson and his law degree from Vanderbilt University.  He practiced law before moving to the field of sports psychology.  He brings to Davidson a life-long interest in the mental side of sport, and prior to starting his practice, L. D. completed coursework toward a master’s degree in sports psychology.

In addition to his work with the golf team, L. D. coaches junior players, college players, mid-amateurs, senior amateurs, and professionals.  His private clients have included the number-one ranked junior in the country as well as college players in the SEC, ACC, PAC 12 and Big 10.  He helps his players find mastery at their competitive level by improving their mental skills, course management skills and practice habits.

L. D. was a member of the Davidson team from 1977 to 1981.  He earned All-Conference honors in 1978 and was the Elon University Invitational individual champion in 1981.  He continues to compete and qualified for the 2023 U.S. Senior Amateur.  Both of his sons, Andy (’17) and Will (’20) played for the Wildcats. 

L. D. began working with the golf team in August 2020.  During his tenure, Davidson has won eight team events, including three Atlantic 10 Championships, and has competed in three NCAA Regional Tournaments.  In the 2023-2024 season, led by three all-conference performers, Davidson recorded two wins, running its streak to three straight seasons with multiple victories.
