Wildcats Earn Two Victories in Busy Weekend Slate

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Despite falling to cross-town rival Charlotte on Friday, the Davidson men's tennis team rebounded with two commanding wins over Belmont Abbey (5-2) on Saturday and the Citadel (6-1) on Sunday.
After the three-match weekend, the Wildcats climb to an even 4-4 on the spring season. Sophomore Goyo Hidalgo highlighted the wins for the 'Cats going 2-0 in doubles alongside Daniel Cowan Jr. and 2-0 in singles play on the No. 1 court.
Friday's match originally scheduled at Charlotte was moved to the Knobloch Tennis Center at Davidson due to rain. The 49ers picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to capture the doubles point against Davidson.
The 49ers swept the singles competition winning on courts 1, 2 and 4, leaving the remaining three matches unfinished.
The Wildcats took to the Davidson tennis courts on Saturday looking to get back into the win column against Belmont Abbey. The Crusaders took the doubles point from the Wildcats, winning on the No.2 and No. 3 courts. Hidalgo and Cowan Jr. claimed the lone win on the No.1 court, 6-2.
Davidson was resilient in the singles, winning five out of the six matches in straight sets to take the 5-2 win. Hidalgo blanked Belmont Abbey's Tim Stemler 6-0, 6-0 on court No.1, followed by Charlie Ratliff winning 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 6.
Freshmen Kai Villagomez and Connor Cole continued a good start to their rookie seasons, winning 6-4, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-3, respectively. Sebastian Carpio Moran closed out the match with a 6-1, 7-5 win on court No. 3.
The 'Cats wrapped up their busy weekend with a home match against The Citadel on Sunday. Davidson secured the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3. as Kai Villagomez and Nikhil Mukherjee picked up their first doubles win of the weekend.
Davidson was dominant in singles again, winning five of the six matches. The singles competition was capped off by a marathon three-set victory by Carpio Moran.

The Wildcats head to South Carolina next weekend for two matches beginning at Presbyterian on Saturday and heading to Wofford on Sunday.
