Upset-Minded ‘Cats Fall Short at The Citadel, 20-14

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Highlighted by three wins over nationally-ranked wrestlers, Davidson took The Citadel, one of the league's preseason favorites, down to the final match before falling to the Bulldogs, 20-14, in Southern Conference action Sunday inside McAlister Field House.
Trailing 10-0 after a forfeit at 125, followed by a major decision, the Wildcats strung together four straight wins sparked by Marley Washington's SV-1 4-1 win over Presley Johnson at 141 pounds.
Davidson's Anderson Heap picked up a sudden victory (5-2) of his own over No. 28 Carson DesRosier to improve to 7-0 in SoCon action. In addition to his fourth win over a ranked foe this season it was his second in as many matches.
At 157, senior Tanner Peake recorded a late take down in his match to knock off No. 26 Kyrel Leavell, 5-4, and pull the Wildcats within one, 10-9.
Bryce Griffin gave Davidson (5-13, 3-4 SoCon) its first lead with a come-from-behind win over No. 21 Thomas Snipes, who entered undefeated in league action. Down 2-1 in the second tiebreaker period, Griffin pulled off an unbelievable reversal just before the final whistle to win 3-2 and put the 'Cats in front, 12-10.
After a setback (major decision) at 174 pounds and unsportsmanlike made it 14-11 in favor of The Citadel (10-7, 6-1 SoCon), the Wildcats responded yet again, this time with a 4-3 decision from Cody Kirk to deadlock the dual at 14-14.
The Bulldogs concluded with wins at 197 and 285 to secure the match.

Davidson will conclude its dual and conference slate Friday with a 7 p.m. "Senior Night" match against Campbell inside John M. Belk Arena.
