'Cats Pick Up Two Wins Over Busy Three-Match Weekend

DAVIDSON - The Davidson men's tennis team picked up wins over Belmont Abbey (6-1) and Pfeiffer (7-0) over three-match weekend.

The two wins and one loss improves the Wildcats record to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10.

The 'Cats opened the weekend with a Monday morning 6-1 victory over Belmont Abbey before closing out the day with a narrow 4-3 loss to North Carolina Central. Davidson finished up the busy weekend back in the win column in a dominant 7-0 sweep of Pfeiffer on Sunday afternoon.

For the weekend, Nico Pinzon and Gregorio Hidalgo dominated in doubles action going a perfect 3-0 with two wins in the number two position and one win at the top doubles spot. Juan Camilo Perez Gongora and Uddayvir Singh also went undefeated as a pair in doubles with two wins while in their first time playing as doubles partners, Daniel Cowan Jr. and Aidan Hernandez picked up their first win.

Hidalgo also paced the singles competition with three wins and no losses while Pinzon (2-0), Cowan (1-0), Miles Kennedy (2-0) and Nikhil Mukherjee (2-0) all went undefeated in singles matches over the weekend.

The Wildcats swept the doubles action on Saturday morning versus Belmont Abbey to take an early lead. Pinzon took a 6-4, 6-4 win on court four and Hidalgo a close 7-5, 7-6 triumph on court three to add additional team points for the 'Cats. The Crusaiders earned what would be their lone point of the match in a No. 1 spot win. However, the Wildcats cleaned up with Singh on court two (6-4, 7-6(7-4)), Mukherjee (8-5) at No. 5 and Kennedy (8-5) on court six for the match.

Saturday afternoon, the 'Cats got off to a strong start in doubles as Perez Gongora and Singh cruised on court one (6-0) Pinzon and Hidalgo won 6-1 at No. 2. The Eagles took the lead with two quick singles wins on courts three and one respectively before Hidalgo evened the score 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-7(5-7), 6-3 victory at No. 4.

NCCU tacked on another team point with a No. 2 win before the 'Cat knotted it up once more at the hand of Pinzon in a three-set win (6-4, 2-6, 6-3). With the last match between Ratliff and NCCU's Oliver Saarinen on court six in the third frame, the Eagles came out victorious with a 2-6, 7-6(7-5), 7-5 match.

The Wildcats returned to their winning ways to close out the weekend, sweeping the Falcons 7-0.
