Charlotte Knocks Off Wildcats in Battle for 704 Cup

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Behind a 19-3 run to start the third quarter, Charlotte defeated Davidson, 71-61, in the annual "Battle of the 704 Cup" Sunday evening inside Halton Arena.
The setback drops the 'Cats to 7-4 overall, while the 49ers end a four-game slide to their cross-county rival to improve to 5-6.
Tanajah Hayes led both teams with 19 points, eight assists and three steals.
Katie Donovan and Charlise Dunn led the way for the Wildcats with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Jasmine Timmerson also scored in double figures with a career-high 13 points on 5-of-5 shooting, including three 3-pointers.
Facing the largest deficit by either team, 49-38, the 'Cats closed the third quarter with 10 unanswered to cut the deficit to one, 49-48, entering the fourth.
Charlotte, which shot 51.8 percent after intermission, used another run early in the final 10 minutes to push the margin back double digits and put the game out of reach.
Trailing 27-23 with 4:31 to play in the second quarter, Davidson ended the half on a 12-3 spurt capped by eight straight points from Dunn to lead 35-30 at the break.
The two teams combined for 47 turnover and 33 second-chance points.
