Wildcats Down George Washington in A-10 Opening Match

DAYTON, Ohio – Anna Withee and Isabel Decker recorded 14 kills apiece to push the Wildcats to a 3-1 victory over George Washington in the opening round of the 2024 Atlantic 10 Championship on Friday afternoon.
In addition to Withee and Decker's efforts, All-Rookie selection Meile Songaila added 13 kills and Emma Slusser collected another 11 of her own.
The victory marks Davidson's first-ever win at the A-10 tournament, as the 'Cats will move onto Semifinal Saturday with a date against No. 1 seed Dayton.
After splitting the first two sets, Davidson shifted gears in set three and jumped out to an 8-1 start with contributions from Kayla Davis and Decker at the net. Despite the early run, George Washington clawed back and took a 16-15 run midway through the frame. Down the stretch however, and after a 19-19 tie, crucial defense from Withee and a pair of kills from Decker allowed the 'Cats to close out on a 6-2 run and win the third, 25-21.
With a 2-1 match lead, the Wildcats stretched out to an 8-5 advantage early after back-to-back kills from Decker and a service ace from Melanie Tilles. After a solo block from Tilles later pushed the score to 15-12, the 'Cats would rely on a pair of kills from Withee and a block from Songaila and Kayla Davis to secure the 25-19 match-clinching victory.
In all, Jordan Hummel picked up 26 digs and Xuan Nguyen (27) and Kinsey Smith (25) combined for 52 assists on 61 Davidson kills.
The Wildcats will meet the Flyers at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in the conference semifinals.
