DAVIDSON - The Davidson women's tennis team finished its Fall competition with three athletes at the inaugural Atlantic 10 Conference Masters.Â
"This weekend we had the first ever A-10 Masters Tournament held at Davidson," said head coach Susanne Depka. "We were fortunate to host this event and to have the majority fo the A-10 tennis teams on campus. It was a great event and a tremendous opportunity for all the players."Â
The Wildcats had three scholar-athletes participate in the tournament in seniors Kavya Patel and Daniela Porges and freshman Ellie Hammond, all of which who picked up at least one win in the main draw of the brackets.Â
"Kavya had a great run to the semi finals in singles," said Depka. "As a doubles team, Dani and Kavya made it to the semi finals and had many chances to take the tournament but came up just short in the end."
Patel defeated competitors from Saint Louis (6-2, 6-4) and UMass (3-6, 6-1, 6-1) in the round of 16 and quarterfinals respectively to earn her spot in the semi finals against Mariam Ibrahim Mohamed Metwally of VCU. Patel won the opening set smoothly at 6-1 before dropping the second in narrow 7-5 fashion. Patel was eventually edged 6-1 in the third set.Â
In doubles, Patel and Porges fought for an 8-7(7) win over the Saint Bonaventure duo in the quarterfinals. However, the Wildcats were edged in the semifinals bout 8-2 by the Richmond pairing.Â
"Ellie was put in the singles competition in the last minute and stepped up to the challenge," Depka noted. "Ellie won two tough matches, the first one went to a third set tiebreaker and lasting over three hours. As a freshman, this was a great experience and opportunity for her and I am proud fo all three of them."Â
Ellie was the lone Davidson player to not have a bye in the opening round of 32 which proved to be no issue as she gutted out a three-set 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(9) victory over Duquesne to advance. In the round of 16, Hammond defeated Amelie Jewelwics of VCU 6-4, 6-2. In the quarterfinals Hammond competed against Katharina Spieth of Rhode Island, and was defeated 6-3, 6-2.Â
"Based on the last two tournaments of the Fall, I am looking forward to the spring season!"Â
Davidson will take a break from competition over the winter and pick back up in the Spring when it welcomes Lenoir-Rhyne to the Davidson Tennis Courts Jan. 26.Â
