DAVIDSON - The Davidson women's tennis team concluded its time at both the ITA Regionals in Chapel Hill as well as the NCCU Invitational over the weekend.Â
CHAPEL HILL, NC
"I was very proud of everyone in the Regionals," said head coach Susanne Depka. "They problem solved against very strong opponents. We have definitely improved a ton and it showed in their performances."Â
On the opening day of the Regional tournament, senior Kavya Patel and freshman Ellie Hammond both picked up a pair of wins in the qualifying draw to earn a spot on day two in the main draw. With the addition of Hammond and Patel, the Wildcats totaled three players in the main draw for the first time in program history.Â
After dropping the opening set of her first match 6-0 to Macy Hitchcock of Furman, Patel came storming back to force three sets which she won 6-2, 6-1 on the way to the next round. Patel continued her momentum through her second match of the qualifying draw, sealing a 6-3, 6-1 triumph, over Emma Shasteen of Gardner-Webb, to take a spot in the main draw.Â
Hammond cruised to her first win of the weekend via 6-2, 6-2 match win over Natalie Crawford of Gardner-Webb. Hammond took her second victory in Regionals when she battled back to a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 three-set victory against Teodora Vuijcic from South Carolina State to join Patel and Daniela Porges in the main draw.Â
All three players fought through their main draw bouts but were unable to move past the opening round with Hammond keeping within close proximity in her match with the No. 1 seed. Hammond moved to the main draw consolation and won her match which was a huge step for the 'Cats.Â
In doubles competition, Porges and Patel teamed up to defeat a duo from North Carolina A&T 8-2 in their opening match before falling 8-3 to a pairing from UNC.Â
Bryson Langford and Savanna Kollock joined forces to play what would turn out to be an eventful doubles match against UNC Charlotte. The Wildcat duo ended up taking the loss but not without a fight as they battled 8-7 with a narrow 10-8 tiebreaker loss.Â
NCCU INVITATIONAL
"I enjoyed watching the matches at NCCU and to see our players use the tools we have been working on in practice translate to the match court," said Depka. "We had a lot of tough competition this Fall which will help prepare us for the Spring and into the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament. It was fun to see senior Linden Patterson competing and laughing with fellow teammate Olivia Hooper, who helped coach over the weekend."Â Â
Many players from the Davidson roster also traveled to compete in the North Carolina Central University Invitational. Highlighting the weekend at the invite were senior Linden Patterson and freshmen Lilly Dwyer, both picking up a couple wins in Flight B.Â
Patterson, who played in her final tournament as a Wildcat as she graduates in December, advanced to her second match following a withdraw by her first opponent before beating Brooke Rogers of CCU 6-4, 6-2 in the second match. After a tough fight, Patterson was bested by Katelyn Hubbard of UNC Wilmington 6-3, 6-2.Â
Dwyer took a 4-6, 6-1 (10-8) tiebreak win over Gabbie Glickstein of UNC Wilmington to open the invitational before battling to a 6-4, 7-5 triumph over Patricia Palencia of NCCU. The rookie battled in the semi-final match but was topped 6-4, 7-5 by Alicia Eberwein of UNC Wilmington to conclude her time over the weekend.Â
