DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson College volleyball team jumped out to a hot start and never looked back, picking up its first win of the season this afternoon, by defeating the Jacksonville Dolphins 3-0.
The Wildcats swept the Dolphins in three straight sets (25-21, 25-19, 25-13) to win their first season opening match in three years.
Senior setter, Sydney Champaigne picked up right where she left off last season, dishing 24 assists and digging seven balls. She also tallied two kills to go along with a .667 hitting percentage. Junior Malia Kay set the tone with 11 kills and nine digs, just one shy of her first career double-double, while Hattie Rodriguez had a team-high 13 kills and two blocks. Florida native Bella Brady made a splash in her collegiate debut, notching 17 digs and two service aces as libero.
As set one came down to the wire, tied 21-21, freshman Jessie Doyal made her first appearance for Davidson, serving the 'Cats to a first set win and picking up an assist along the way. The Georgia native finished with five assists and three digs. In set two, the 'Cats were neck and neck with the Dolphins again, but a service ace from Sola Omonije, a Madeline Wynn kill and one more Champaigne ace put the set away and handed Davidson a 2-0 advantage.
The final frame of the day saw Champaigne lead the Wildcats to a 4-0 opening run. Davidson remained in control for the remainder of the match, too, as Caroline Mohler, Omonije and Rodriguez shut down any threat of a Jacksonville comeback at the net.
The 'Cats return to action on Sunday afternoon for a 2 p.m. start against regional rival, Charlotte. The match will be streamed on ESPN+ from inside Belk Arena.
