HEMPSTEAD, N.Y – Davidson sophomore Kyle Gorant is beginning to heat up after winning his third straight bout, but wrestling fell at Hofstra Friday evening, 37-7.
Gorant moved to 9-7 overall and 6-4 in 133-pound dual matches with a major decision against the Prides Justin Hoyle, 14-3. Gorant took his shots against Hoyle, earning five total takedowns, including two each in the first and second periods to win with ease.
Freshman Gavin Henry raced out to an 8-0 lead after two periods powered by a four-count near fall in the first and held off a flurry of Sage Heller shots in the third to win at 184 pounds, 11-4.
Heavyweight sophomore Mitchell Trigg battled in a 13-9 decision loss to end the match, earning a quick takedown over his Pride opponent, but was unable to land another shot.
It will be quick turnaround for Davidson as they return to the mats tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 1 for a showdown with the Pioneers of Sacred Heart. The first bout from Fairfield, Conn., is slated for noon.
