Davidson Falls in Home Finale to UNCG, 4-3

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Playing at home for the final time this season, Davidson battled to the last match but fell short, 4-3, to its one-time Southern Conference foe UNCG Thursday afternoon on Senior Day in men's tennis action at the Davidson Tennis Courts.
Prior to the match, the Wildcats (15-7) honored seniors J.B. Gough, Ricky Saad, Zack Zapatero and Jordan Hart in their final home match.
Tied at 3-all, the match came down to the No. 6 singles position where freshman Thomas Mason battled Ian Melnik and it went all the way to a third-set tie-breaker. The two had split their first two sets at 6-1 and 6-3, and were tied at 6-all to force the tie-breaker. It went back and forth, with Melnik pulling out the deciding team point with a 10-8 win.
Davidson dropped the doubles point to UNCG (8-12) with setbacks of 6-3 and 6-4 at the No. 1 and 2 spots. The senior team of Ricky Saad and Jordan Hart were up 5-4 at No. 3 before the match was halted.
Freshman Axel Fries got the first team point with a strong 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 to push his record to a team-best 17-4. He has seven of those wins at No. 3.
Then down 3-1, Artem Khrapko and David Hager tied things up with a pair of three-set wins at No. 5 and 2 singles. Khrapko sealed up his victory with two 6-1 decisions after falling in the second set 6-4. The junior hit the double-digit mark in wins at 10-8 on the season.
Hager continued his impressive junior season, pushing his career-best record to 16-5 with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 triumph.
Davidson closes out its regular season with a Saturday match at Appalachian State set for 1 p.m.
