'Cats Win First Match of Season, Splits Doubleheader

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, winning a 6-1 decision against North Carolina A&T in the second match of the day after falling 6-1 to UNCG to start the doubleheader.

In the first match of the day vs. their former Southern Conference opponent UNCG (2-0), the Wildcats got their lone team point from junior J.B. Gough. He went all the way to a tie-breaker in the third set, pulling it out to win his match, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 at No. 4.

Jack Riazzi at No. 6 singles also went to a third set by winning his second set 6-0. The sophomore, who lost the first set 6-4, would go on to drop the last set 6-3.

In the late afternoon match vs. the Aggies, Davidson (1-3) regrouped, sweeping the doubles matches and then winning all but one of the singles matches for its first victory of the year.

The 'Cats rolled to doubles wins of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1 at all three positions. The pair of Gough and Shamael Chaudhry won their second match of the season at No. 2, while the duo of Riazzi and David Hager netted their first.

In singles play, Chaudhry earned a 6-3, 6-0 win at No.1 to move to 2-2 on the season. Artem Khrapko followed at No. 2, giving up just one game in an easy 6-1, 6-0 decision for his first win of the season.

Jordan Hart filled in at No. 3 and picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory, while Hager won his team-leading third match of the season with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 4.

Rounding out the team win was Riazzi at No. 5, who picked up his second career singles win with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Davidson returns home to face Wingate and Richmond next weekend, Feb. 13-14.
