DAYTON, Ohio – Davidson volleyball (10-17, 5-8 A-10) succumbed to a road sweep Friday night, falling 25-22, 25-19, 25-19 to No. 23 Dayton (24-1, 13-0 A-10).
The Wildcats were led by sophomore duo Sabrina Shepherd and Mason Rooney, who each collected six kills. Rooney recorded a team-high .333 hitting percentage.
The opening stanza was a close contest, with neither team gaining more than a three-point lead until Dayton took a 22-19 lead late in the frame. The 'Cats had a 3-0 rally right before that to try and steal momentum, thanks to a Sabrina Shepherd kill and two Flyer miscues, but were unable to fully take control, falling 25-22.
The Wildcats started Set Two in control, ahead by two points before Dayton delivered ten straight points to double their lead at 14-7. A Flyer service error and back-to-back kills from Ciera Cockrell gave Davidson a small rally, but Davidson ultimately dropped the frame 25-19.
A couple of three and four-point rallies gave Dayton the upper hand in what turned out to ultimately be the final frame. Again, the 'Cats pulled off a sequence of three unanswered points late to try and swing the tempo, but couldn't overcome the early deficit and fell 25-19, losing the match in straight sets.
Davidson concludes their 2016 campaign Sunday, traveling to Saint Louis to face the Billikens. The Wildcats will return to the Gateway City next weekend for the Atlantic 10 Championships, their first postseason berth since joining the league in 2014.
